NihongoUp was an Adobe AIR desktop Japanese educational game and reviewing tool. The program featured several game modes which allowed the player to improve his kana typing and reading speed, review JLPT kanji and vocabulary, and learn Japanese grammar in context. The game was compatible with Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone 7 versions of the game were also available.

In 2010, NihongoUp evolved into a full-fledged online Japanese language learning community which includes interactive lessons, online review exercises, downloadable applications, and cheat sheets--all designed to provide a complete solution for learners of the Japanese language. In 2011, this content was ported to LinguaLift, and re-packaged to provide a home for self-learners of Japanese, offering both an E-textbook, and learning tools.

Features

The NihongoUp game is separated into four different modes. In the Hiragana and Katakana modes, the player is supposed to shoot down balloons by typing the correct reading of the characters written on them. In the Kanji, Vocabulary, Particles and Counters modes, the player is presented with an incomplete sentence and must choose the correct character or word to be placed into the marked part of the sentence.

The online Japanese textbook includes lessons geared towards both self-learners and those taking conventional classes alike, and teaches real-world Japanese through a mix of dialogues, audio recordings and traditional explanations with custom diagrams. Split into 'Levels', each 'Level' contains 9 chapters, which have lessons which focus on themes, grammar points and vocabulary from the JLPT, GCSE and A-Level examinations.

The NihongoUp game makes up one part of a suite of online and offline applications for users of the site, which drill kanji, vocabulary, grammar and more - mapping the users' progress each time the applications are used for language study.

In Summer 2011, the NihongoUp game was ported to the Arcade section of the Japanese LinguaLift online Japanese learning website, which incorporated all of the content from the website of the same name as the game.
